Rescue
Vicky was born with a cleft palate. Since she was unable to be sold or bred, she was going to be euthanized. Cleft palates are more common in certain breeds and are generally visible as soon as the puppy is born. There is a wide range of outcomes for puppies with this defect and some struggle much more than others.
Without knowing what the future held for Vicky, Bosley’s Place agreed to rescue her, at four weeks old, to ensure she had the best shot at a happy and healthy life.
Some puppies with cleft palates face few complications as they grow up and develop. It is necessary to wait until around 6 months of age to determine what level of medical treatment is required.
Vet Visit
Unfortunately, as Vicky got older, it became apparent that this defect was causing her significant health issues. She continued to fight respiratory illnesses, some of which were so severe and required hospitalization.
Vicky’s medical team has determined that her cleft palate requires surgery. If left untreated, Vicky will continue to suffer from aspiration pneumonia, which can ultimately be fatal.
Vicky is one of the happiest puppies we have had the privilege of watching grow up, and her circumstances are no fault of her own. With surgery, she can live a happy and healthy life.
