Rescue
French Fry arrived to Austin Humane Society when she was only 4 days old. She was found with her mom and siblings as strays. This little family spent the majority of their time in foster homes until they were weaned and ready for their forever homes.
French Fry returned back to the shelter at two months of age and ready for adoption. During that time, she became alarmingly ill. She had blood in her stool, had lost a significant amount of weight, was lethargic, weak and cold to the touch.
Vet Visit
French Fry was immediately seen by the medical team and testing confirmed that she was fighting parvovirus. Her bloodwork also showed that she had critically low blood sugar. At only 1.6 pounds, the medical team at Austin Humane feared the worst. In order to get around the clock supportive care, French Fry was transferred to the ICU at the emergency vet.
An IV catheter was placed to deliver medication, including IV dextrose to support her blood sugar levels, and plasma infusions. A feeding tube was also placed so that she could have nutrition since she had stopped eating. An ultrasound was also performed, that ruled out the possibility of a liver shunt, which can cause similar symptoms.
As French Fry fought parvovirus, her blood sugar levels have continued to crash. As a result of severe hypoglycemia, she will need to remain hospitalized until her blood sugar levels are able to regulate on their own. In order to easily check French Fry’s glucose levels multiple times a day without a blood draw, a digital device has been inserted into her side.
This small fry has experienced more than most in her short life, but we are committed to helping her get better.
