Shelter
Tinkerbell, a 121 pound Mastiff, was found by the staff at Austin Humane Society tied to the fence in the back parking lot. It is more than likely she was abandoned due to her significant medical issues. She was microchipped, but the chip had never been registered so there was no contact information on it.
Upon first sight, it was clear that Tinkerbell was struggling with her mobility. She has trouble standing and can be unsteady in her rear end. She will often need some assistance to help her stand, but can walk on her own once she gets up.
Vet Visit
Tinkerbell immediately underwent diagnostics to determine the source of her muscle weakness. She had x-rays which showed significant arthritis in her hips, as well as some changes to her spine (partial fusing of her a few vertebrae.) Combined, these ailments make it difficult for her to stand up.
Tinkerbell needs lifelong anti-inflammatory medication, in addition to joint supplements, to keep her comfortable for the remainder of her years. She will require yearly bloodwork to check to see if her liver is tolerating ongoing medication.
Senior dogs, especially those with medical issues, are so often overlooked by adopters due to the care and costs associated. We want to make sure that not only does Tinkerbell receive all of the medical care she needs, but can find the perfect home.
Staff at AHS have told us that Tinkerbell is the perfect gentle giant. She loves everyone she meets, loves other dogs, and her favorite thing is lounging while chewing a delicious treat. She drools constantly and howls when she thinks no one is watching.
