Zoe, her mom, and her six siblings were surrendered to Furkids by their owner as an accidental litter that they could not afford to care for. Zoe is the runt of the litter, significantly smaller than the rest of her siblings. When she arrived, she was only 2 pounds while the rest of her siblings weighed 5-7 pounds.
She and her whole litter were in foster care until they were old enough to briefly return to the rescue center. Unfortunately, Zoe contracted an upper respiratory infection while she was there and began to show signs of illness. Her breathing was labored, nasal discharge was present, and she had stopped eating. Due to her size and fragility, there was significant cause for concern.
Vet Visit
Zoe was taken to the emergency vet where x-rays confirmed that she was suffering from severe pneumonia. She was immediately placed in an oxygen chamber and started on IV fluids.
To make matters worse, Zoe’s legs have started to bow out significantly. Additional radiographs have indicated that she is suffering from a rare nutritional deficiency called rickets, likely due to the inappetence associated with pneumonia. This disease effects young dogs with undeveloped bone structures, and is generally caused by a lack of phosphorus or vitamin D.
Zoe requires around the clock care at the emergency hospital to get better. This includes continued oxygen until she can breathe on her own, IV fluids and medication. She also needs ongoing care to address and correct her deformed front legs.
