Rescue
Wags & Walks rescued Teddy from Metro Animal Care & Control in Nashville. Shortly after, someone came for him claiming that he belonged to them. The very next day, Wags discovered that he was left at another shelter in a neighboring county, and of course they rescued him a second time. Teddy had since developed significant upper respiratory symptoms after his time spent in two shelters.
Kennel cough is extremely common for any dog who enters the shelter system and Teddy’s upper respiratory infection was being treated while in foster care. However, after a couple of weeks, Teddy’s cough worsened and he was having trouble breathing.
Vet Visit
Teddy was immediately admitted to the emergency hospital. An IV catheter was placed in order to quickly provide fluids and medication. Radiographs confirmed that his kennel cough had evolved into pneumonia, which can be fatal if left untreated. After two days of hospitalization, Teddy’s condition improved to where he was able to return home with additional medications.
A week had passed and Teddy was doing well, when suddenly things took a turn for the worse. He became incredibly lethargic and was unable to stand. Blood was visible in his nasal discharge and his fever was climbing.
Teddy returned to the hospital for a second time and his fever was confirmed to be 106.3°, which is life threatening. At this temperature, he is at risk of fatal internal complications and organ failure.
The medical team quickly began providing supportive care to address his fever. Since his symptoms are much worse than before, he will undergo additional testing for diseases like distemper, influenza, and canine adenovirus. They will also test for fungal infections by performing a bronchoscopy. He is currently being treated for antibiotic resistant pneumonia, and his condition remains guarded.
