Rescue

Paloma was found as a stray and taken home by a good Samaritan. It wasn’t long before she became very ill. She was extremely lethargic, would not eat, and had a significant amount of blood in her stool. The finder immediately took her to the vet for emergency care.

Vet Visit

The medical team quickly assessed Paloma’s condition and began treatment. They also tested her for parvovirus, which at four years of age was unlikely, but possible if she had never been vaccinated.

Since Paloma was not eating and was suffering from persistent diarrhea, an IV catheter and NG feeding tube were placed. In addition to fluids, she would receive multiple medications intravenously. She also underwent a plasma transfusion to address blood loss.

The results indicated that she was in fact fighting parvovirus. She has received the specialized injection approved to treat the virus and will need around the clock emergency care to ensure she survives. If left untreated, the virus can lead to fatal levels of dehydration and within 48 to 72 hours.
