Rescue
Lucy, short for Lucy Gray Baird, was surrendered to Stone Creek Veterinary Hospital. She arrived with extensive injuries to her front legs, a damaged eye, and is emaciated.
Lucy was said to have fallen from a high surface, breaking both of her front legs. One of the breaks is an open fracture where the bone has protruded from the skin. The injury went untreated, which led to infection and severe pain. Her body condition had declined to the level of emaciation, leading to a much more fragile structure than that of a healthy dog.
Unfortunately, this is not the extent of Lucy’s suffering. She had developed an eye ulcer, also left untreated, which significantly worsened over time.
Thankfully, Hearts & Bones was contacted to help Lucy. She was welcomed into their program to ensure she received all the care she needs.
Vet Visit
Lucy underwent a thorough examination, bloodwork and x-rays to determine next steps.
The medical team determined that Lucy has bilateral radial-ulnar fractures. There is a small amount of healthy and accessible bone left in each leg. Lucy’s condition will require an immediate and specialized orthopedic surgery to place screws and plates in both legs.
She will need a separate procedure to remove her eye. Fortunately, her eye is not causing her pain at this time, but could cause her issues in the future.
Lucy is warming up quickly to all of those who are caring for her. She may not know it yet, but the rest of her life will be full of love, care, and security.
