Shelter
Benjamin was found as a stray, clearly suffering from pain in both of his hind legs. The Multnomah County Animal Shelter in Portland, OR does not have the resources to provide extensive medical care, let alone further diagnostics. County shelters in this area have been experiencing an unprecedented number of intakes lately, and all kennels are full. Dogs like Benjamin are among the most vulnerable within the shelter population when open-intake facilities must euthanize for space. Thankfully, Stumptown Strays immediately said yes to this impossibly smiley guy to ensure he gets all the medical care he needs.

Vet Visit
Soon after intake, Benjamin underwent a thorough exam to determine the root cause of his pain. Testing revealed that both of his cranial cruciate ligaments (CCLs) have ruptured. This type of injury can result from trauma or the gradual degeneration of the ligaments, leading to swelling, chronic pain, muscle atrophy, and early onset arthritis. Without treatment, it is a debilitating condition, especially when it affects both legs. To make matters worse, it was also discovered that Benjamin is suffering from an infection that has spread to the bone. He needs immediate treatment to stop the infection from progressing and multiple surgeries to repair his hind legs.
Despite having a really tough time lately, Benjamin remains incredibly kind and easy to handle. Even though moving is very painful for him, he has been such a good patient and willingly goes wherever he’s asked.
