Portland, OR
Rescue: Stumptown Strays

This is Luke. He was hit by a car, crushing the bones in his back leg and fracturing his shoulder. As if two broken legs weren’t hard enough, both injuries are on his right side, making it very difficult for him to walk. He’s in a lot of pain and needs immediate surgery to repair his broken bones, followed by long-term physical therapy.

Luke was found as a severely injured stray after being hit by a car. He couldn’t put weight on either his front or back right leg, which made it very hard to walk. The Stockton Animal Shelter performed initial exams and confirmed he had suffered multiple fractures requiring immediate and intensive intervention. They reached out to Stumptown Strays in Portland, OR, who gladly agreed to help this little guy.

Vet Visit

Luke was transported from California to Oregon and went straight to the vet to assess the extent of his injuries. Additional testing and X-rays revealed that his femur is broken in multiple places, and he’s also suffering from a fractured shoulder blade. An orthopedic surgeon reviewed his imaging and feels that a reparative surgery should be attempted on his back leg. The break is incredibly severe, but because both of his injuries are on the right side of his body, repairing the leg offers him the best chance at full mobility.

His shoulder blade fracture likely won’t require surgery, but he will need further diagnostics to ensure the break isn’t causing any neurological pain. Luke’s medical team also plans to splint his front leg to help encourage its use and rebuild strength. He’ll also be starting an intensive physical therapy and rehabilitation program shortly after he has surgery.

It’s not every day that a rescue steps up for a dog with two broken legs, but caring for Luke has been an absolute joy for the team at Stumptown. They’ve shared that he has a heart of gold and has never met a stranger.
