Shelter: Muddy Paws

When NYC Animal Care Centers reached capacity and closed their doors to intake, Muddy Paws Rescue stepped in to save the most vulnerable. This group included 2-year-old Beethoven, with early onset arthritis and hip dysplasia. While he’s able to put off surgery for now, he’ll be on joint supplements for life.

Rescue

The local New York City shelters, known as ACC, were at maximum capacity for several months. They were forced to close their doors to surrenders in October of 2023. Our rescue partner, Muddy Paws had never seen anything like this happen and knew they needed to do whatever they could to help. They asked the community to get involved by fostering these dogs in need. Once they had enough foster homes secured, they made an effort to pull as many dogs as possible.

Muddy Paws identified the most at-risk members of the shelter population. This included dogs with severe medical issues, seniors, and pit bull mixes. On October 20th, a group of dogs were transferred from the care centers to rescue. Some of these dogs needed additional medical care: varying dentals to mass removals, biopsies, x-rays and hospitalization for pneumonia.

Thanks to proceeds from WeRateDogs merchandise, we were able to sponsor all of their medical care. We’re thrilled to introduce you to this very special group.

This is Isabella. A senior, requiring all basic medical care, who was surrendered after her owner passed away.
This is Angel, rescued with his best friend Tinkerbell. He is a 14-year-old chihuahua with dental disease and a collapsing trachea.
This is Tinkerbell, an 11-year-old chihuahua, suffering from dental disease, a heart murmur, cherry eye, and grade 3 luxating patellas.
This is Dino. This kind boy needed all basic medical care, including neuter. He was at risk for euthanasia only due to his breed.
This is Hazelnut. She has a long list of medical including: dental disease, mammary masses, and significantly overweight.
This goofball is Overton. He was found as an emaciated stray.
This gentle boy is named Pumpkin. He was found as a starving stray, without any prior medical care.
This is Peluche. He is extremely underweight and in desperate need of a bang trim.
This is Pretty Letty. She is suffering from dental disease and a nasty upper respiratory infection.
This is our buddy Beethoven. Since his hip hurts, he’s found this is the best way to accept all the pets.

Pupdates

Thanks to the incredible work of Muddy Paws, this entire group of dogs was provided all of the medical care they so desperately needed and deserved. All but one of the dogs rescued from this group has been adopted. Dino, the three-year-old pit bull, is waiting patiently for his happily ever after. In the meantime, he’s soaking up long walks, couch cuddles and peanut butter filled kongs in his foster home. If you’re interested in learning more about Dino, please visit his adoption post.
