Our rescue partner, Homeward Trails, recently received 18 dogs battling heartworms, a dangerous disease in dogs that can be fatal if not treated. Coincidentally, almost all the dogs are beagles or hound breeds. We affectionately call them the Heartworm Hounds. Every one of these dogs were transferred from under-resourced shelters who did not have the ability to care for them.
Luckily, Homeward Trails shares our goal of helping underdogs and giving them the opportunity to find a loving forever home – so taking these pups in need was a no-brainer for them. Allow us to introduce you to a few of these wonderful dogs.

Vet Visit
When they arrived at Homeward Trails, each dog had already begun showing symptoms of heartworms, making the need for treatment dire. Following the American Heartworm Society protocol, the medical staff’s care plan includes Doxycycline, steroids, and three immiticide injections.
Eliminating heartworms is no short or easy task. The entire treatment process to kill mature and immature worms takes about four months, and there’s always a risk that problems can arise in the future. Without continued support throughout their whole journey, their road to health could be even longer. Many of the pups are available for adoption, and we’d love for every one of them to get healthy and find their forever families.
