Rescue

Our rescue partner Animal Pad, in partnership with Keeping Finn, made a trip down to Mexico to help dogs in need. They came to the aid of an old black lab who had been abandoned at a property – alone – for over six years. The lab, Morgan, was kept alive by neighbors feeding him kibbles through the fence. Despite his isolation, he’d bring his most prized possession to the fence for passerby’s to play with him. An old, dirty, crushed up water bottle he’d ask strangers to toss for him so he could happily fetch it.

Freedom Ride

Keeping Finn and Animal Pad obtained legal permission to spring the lab from the backyard and gave Morgan his first taste of freedom in six years. The rescue loaded him up and brought him back to the U.S. They made sure his special water bottle was in tow.

Shelter

Morgan was taken to Animal Pad across the boarder and loved on by every single person there. “He was hugged, kissed, and shown affection the way he should have been every day for the past 6 years, and our entire team loved him hard to make up for all the time he missed out on,” said staff at Animal Pad. “Despite being by himself for so long, he’s a good black lab who loves people and loves fetch.”

Medical Challenges

After moving into his foster home, Morgan got a medical workup. Just as this old guy’s life was beginning, he was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor – cancer. He is undergoing chemotherapy to treat it.

“Morgan is always a star patient at the vet, but he was especially adorable during his first chemo session as he held his favorite ball in his mouth the entire time. We call it his emotional support ball. After chemo, he asked his oncology team to play a quick game of fetch and they happily obliged. His vet team, like everyone who meets Morgan, sees his special. It’s impossible not to.”

Foster

Morgan is currently with the perfect foster home – a place with humans who love him as much as he deserves. He has a foster sister who is the spitting image of him, and they get along so well. Morgan is a happy-go-lucky guy who is a puppy in a senior’s body. He’s got a lot of fight left in him and an entire team of people behind him to support him in his battle against cancer.

Shelter

Little Car Seat French Fry (yep, that’s his name), was picked up by animal control and taken to the shelter. Once there, it was clear he was suffering from parvovirus – a deadly virus contagious in puppies. Parvo can lead to fever, lethargy and progresses to severe vomiting and diarrhea. These symptoms in the puppy leads to dehydration and ultimately damage to their immune system and intestines. French Fry came to the shelter just in time for the stage of parvo he was at.

Vet Visit

The vet started treatment on French Fry immediately to give him the best chance at beating the nasty virus his little body was infected with. According to canineparvovirus.org, dogs have an 80% chance of survival if treated within the first 48 hours of infection.

Foster

Thankfully, little Car Seat French Fry is part of the happiest of meals now – and is recovering well from the virus! He’s in a foster home learning manners, socializing with other dogs and getting as much love as he deserves. He has a few more vet visits, then will be up for adoption!

Shelter

Lambert came to the shelter as a stray, covered in fleas and filthy. At 9-years-old, he’s been neglected and not cared for his entire life. During his intake, it was clear that he was in an immense amount of pain due to eye and mouth issues.

Vet Visit

Lambert’s discomfort was obvious, so he underwent surgery to remove his eye immediately. It turns out that his eye itself was deformed, which was causing it to not fit properly in the socket. While at the vet, little Lambert also had his mouth looked at. He had twenty rotten and infected teeth removed. Despite all the physical trauma Lambert had been living with, he’s all fixed up and on the path to recovery.

Foster

Despite being a stray, everyone at the shelter, vet office and his fosters say that he is the “most precious and sweet senior fella in the land.” He’s very gentle, calm and overall a “super chill dog who is great on the leash (at least for the couple of blocks he’s willing to get his steps in). His main goal in life is looking adorable and binge watching his favorite TV shows… even if it’s out of just one eye.”

Shelter

Poor little Peanut was hit by a car. Animal control picked him up and dropped him off at a shelter, which isn’t yet no-kill. Austin Humane Society took on Peanut’s case in order to get him the lifesaving care that he needs. The injuries to his hind legs are extensive, and he has a massive open wound that needs treatment.

Vet Visit

While at the vet, Peanut had his open wound and other hind leg looked at. The open wound is a fracture on his back right leg that is also severely infected. Upon additional examination, poor Peanut was discovered to also have broken his left back leg.

Supporting Peanut is a whole team of people, who got together to determine the best course of action to treat his medical challenges.

Peanut’s infected leg is being treated with medication and bandages for now. He will have a fracture repair surgery for his back left leg, then once that’s healed, he’ll have his back right leg amputated. In total, Peanut needs funding for the fracture repair surgery, amputation and medication to help him through the healing process.

From staff: “He’s very sweet and easy going! He tolerates his daily bandage changes like a champ.” Because of his injuries, he often gets carried around in his “bed chariot.”

Foster

Peanut is currently staying with Austin Humane Society since his infected leg needs daily bandage changes. However, after his surgeries he will go to a foster home to heal pup.

“All he wants is belly rubs and head scratches. His tail wags constantly despite the fact that he must be in pain. He obviously loves human companionship and is a giant sweetie! He loves everyone he meets,” said one of his caretakers at the shelter. “He’s met a few other dogs through the fences out in the potty yard areas and seems to be good with other dogs too. He’s mostly getting carried around because of his injuries but I think he’s naturally curious and likes to walk around as he can!”

Shelter

Sloane is a four-month-old puppy who came to the shelter with severe deformities in her front legs. This Shepard/Doberman mix is full of joy and ready to be a normal, happy puppy. With surgery, she can be exactly that.

Vet Visit

Sloane got some x-rays done to see what was going on in her front legs. The vet diagnosed it as an old injury that had healed incorrectly. Both bones in the lower part of her front leg had fused together. With a successful surgery, she’s expected to heal well and not have mobility issues. However, she is still a puppy and has some growing to do. These injuries and corrective surgery may affect the length of her legs as she gets bigger.

Foster

According to her foster family, “Sloan is a big baby who just wants to be a part of the party. She loves to be held like a baby, play with the big dogs, has a great appetite, and her ears have a personality all of their own!”

Sloane not only parties hard, she snoozes hard too.

Rescue

Rue was found living in an abandoned building and was severely malnourished. She was taken in by rescuers to stay safe. If she had an owner, they were never found, and she arrived at One Tail at a Time for love and support. Upon intake, it was discovered she has a diaphragmatic hernia, a severe condition where there is a break in her diaphragm that is letting her abdominal organs move up into her chest. If left untreated, her shifting organs could potentially crush her heart or lungs.

Vet Visit

The vets determined Rue needs surgery to fix her diaphragmatic hernia to prevent the possibility of her organs crushing each other. It is a complex procedure and will need to be performed by a specialist surgeon. We will of course keep everyone pupdated on her surgery progress.

Foster

Rue is in a foster home until her surgery. After her procedure, she’ll return to her foster home to rest up until she’s back on all four paws – then she’ll be ready for her forever home and up for adoption!

Sniffles

Shelter

Sniffles is a senior guy who came to the shelter missing a nose, bad eyesight, mats, ticks and open wounds. He was a stray who needed some TLC.

Sniffles’ rescuer said: “Once he realized he was safe and we were nice people, he just melted into us. He’s one of the chillest, sweetest dogs.”

Vet Visit

While at the vet, Sniffles enjoyed a spa experience with a medicated bath to remove the ticks. In all, over 75 were removed from his little body. The vet thinks his nose is as a result of possibly a result of cancer and no treatment can be done with it since it’s fully healed. Sniffles does have an infection in his eyes and he needs a dental workup too.

Foster

Sniffles is currently being looked after in a foster home while his wounds heal up.

Shelter

Fotis arrived at Austin Pets Alive! with the majority of his tail missing and an infection in what was left of it. He also had mobility and nerve issues in his back limbs. Commonly known as “tail pull injury,” he had trauma to his tail that caused damage to the nerves in his lower back, which also control his hind limbs. Because of this, Fotis has urinary and bladder issues which need medical support. The shelter watched Fotis closely and helped manually express his urine when needed. Fotis needed surgery to help repair his tail and clear the infection.

Though the shelter environment was stressful to Fotis, he quickly earned the love of everyone on staff with his calm, sweet, gentle demeanor.

Vet Visit

Fotis underwent the necessary surgery for his tail. The bad news: he lost the remainder of the infected parts of his tail. The good news: he now has a bunny tail and it is very, very cute.

The vet also checked out some superficial wounds, removed some ticks, and evaluated his hind limbs. He was diagnosed as incontinent and will have lifelong urinary retention issues, which will need medical support and supervision. Daily urine output is important to monitor in incontinent dogs, as they are more prone to urinary tract infections (something we definitely don’t want for Mr. Fotis). The vet also advised that dogs with “tail pull” injuries can also be prone to constipation, so Fotis will be monitored for that as well.

Foster

Fotis is waiting for his forever home, but in the meantime he is well-loved by his foster family. “Behaviorally, Fotis is a dream dog,” his foster mom says. “It has been such a joy to watch his personality blossom as he has gotten more comfortable in our home. Fotis is incredibly laid back, very affectionate and just all round good natured. He currently lives in a foster home with two human siblings under the age of five and one dog sibling. Fotis’ favorite activities are watching tv with his family, cuddling, taking chill walks in the park, and visiting with friends.”

And… Fotis knows magic! He can make his ears disappear.

Topo Chico

Shelter

Topo Chico lived outside on a tether with several other dogs at his original home in Texas. He was surrendered to a rescuer, who helped transport him to One Tail at a Time. When he arrived, he tested positive for heartworms and had developed a severe heart murmur. This sweet little pup also has blood in his urine, so he needs a lot of medical support.

Freedom Ride

“Through it all, he has been the sweetest little guy. He rode all the way from Houston to Chicago without a peep!”

Vet Visit

The poor guy had a cardiologist consultation and the vet found out that his heartworm had progressed to a fatal stage called Caval Syndrome. CS occurs when a mass of adult heartworms is hindering the normal blood flow through the heart.

Surgical extraction of the blockage became immediately necessary if there is to be a reasonable chance for recovery. He was rushed to the University of Illinois where 11 adult worms were surgically extracted from his heart. He’s currently in a foster home resting and recovering.

Shelter

Bambi was surrendered as an owner-requested euthanasia, due to the high cost of treating her bloody diarrhea, lethargy and difficulty eating for the previous three days. She was rescued just in time: her symptoms were consistent with parvovirus and she faced euthanasia the same day if someone didn’t step in to help.

Vet Visit

She was taken to the vet and thankfully tested negative for parvovirus! She was hooked up to IV fluids for two days to get her rehydrated and medicated. She was put on some anti-diarrheal medications and a specialized diet to get her tummy back on track.

Foster

After undergoing treatment, Bambi is now feeling better and in a foster home. “She’s doing so great! She’s really come into her personality. Her hobbies include playing fetch (with balls so big they barely fit in her little mouth) and giving so many snuggles.” Bambi is medically cleared for adoption!
