Shelter
Blue was found in an abandoned house, starving and severely emaciated. There was another dog in the house with her, but unfortunately had passed. Despite these horrific conditions, Blue was in good spirits. None of the neighbors recognized either of the dogs, so she was taken to a shelter. She did very well for her intake examination, even though it was clear she was not doing well. She was vomiting, which concerned the shelter team members that she had an obstruction, so she was sent for x-rays.

Vet Visit
Blue went to an ER to get x-rays, which confirmed a foreign body obstruction. She underwent immediate emergency surgery to remove the obstruction, which turned out to be seven pounds of materials including boxers, shoes, t-shirts, and a plastic bag. Since being abandoned in that house, she was left to fend for herself and eat whatever she could find. Following her surgery she needs constant monitoring as she is at risk of refeeding syndrome. This occurs when a starving animal is fed too generously, and can cause more harm than good.

Foster
Post-surgery, Blue was sent to live with a foster to care for her. Despite the terrible conditions she was found in, she continues to be trusting of people, and even made friends with her foster siblings: another dog and a cat. The immediate goal for Blue’s recovery is to avoid refeeding syndrome and gain a healthy amount of weight so she can find a forever home to love her for the rest of her life.
